Complex Trauma (CPTSD) and Self Destructive Behaviors
What is self-destructive behavior?
Self-destructive behavior is when someone acts to harm themselves either physically or mentally.
Usually, people exhibit self-destructive behaviors when they are overwhelmed and cannot deal with additional stress or powerful emotions. Over time, these behaviors can form an addiction.
Self-destructive behaviors may include:
- Self-harm
- Addictions to drugs and alcohol
- Risky behaviors include dangerous actions that would place the person at risk for physical harm.
- Disordered eating
- Compulsive actions such as gambling
- Acting in ways to purposefully push people away.
- Setting themselves up for failure on purpose.
- Suicidal ideation
It is important to note that everyone is susceptible to self-destructive behaviors. These behaviors are not determined by race, level of schooling, age, or economic status.
Destructive behaviors do not mean that an individual is suicidal. But, they do mean that the individual struggling with these behaviors is hurting and deserves help and compassion.
